Cobra Gold, polls can wait

Re: "Junta keeps US waiting over Cobra Gold", National, July 14

It is appropriate for the military junta to keep the US guessing whether Thailand will participate in this year's Cobra Gold military exercises.

Thailand has been a cordial and loyal friend of the US for more than a hundred years. In pressuring Thailand to have an election immediately, without trying to understand the reasons it is stuck on the path to democracy, the US has become callous.

The junta should demonstrate to America and Europe that Thailand must be treated as a strategic partner, not a pushover.
