Cash and responsibility

Re: "No one wins in this shameful situation", Letters, February 7.

Oh come on, Khun Yingwai. Of course there are winners in the old foreign man-young Thai woman scenario, the biggest one being the Thai state, due to the billions in foreign currency ending up in Thailand, lost to the silly foreigners forever and a day. Why else do you think property has to be registered under the wife's name?

All cash from property confiscated by Thai women from their hapless foreign partners under these existing regulations should be sequestered by the government to support Thai women who have not managed to land a wealthy foreigner and who have been abandoned together with their children by their irresponsible husbands who, for reasons beyond me, cannot be forced to pay any maintenance whatsoever.

Yes, there is indeed a cultural deterioration, the worst kind personified by a large number of Thai men whose behaviour towards their wives is surely one of the reasons why many Thai ladies prefer a foreigner regardless of his [old] age - which of course has the additional benefit of him not being around for too long.

Rather than looking after their families, many Thai men seem to be much more interested in their appearance, which they like to model on their favourite soap opera stars. It is clearly the women who keep this country afloat.
