Academics adding fuel to fire

Re: "Academics question the role of top brass in talks", News, December 3.

Poor education is the common factor blamed for Thailand's immature colour-coded politics. I would like to remind certain academics to look in the mirror and ask whether they are the main cause of such immaturity.

An extreme example of this is their questioning of the army chief's presence in the meeting between Yingluck and Suthep, which could never have happened without the chief's initiative. I was moved by his suggestions of a ceasefire and talks. No army chief has ever done that before. They usually prefer instead to stay quiet for fear of public misperception (but then suddenly appearing when the time is ripe for a coup). Though General Prayuth's initiative failed, I still applaud him for his show of humanity.
