A good move

Re: "Top bureaucrats say vote won't end strife", Politics, December 12.

A meeting of permanent secretaries of all 20 ministries and those at equivalent levels on Wednesday reached an agreement on the bureaucracy's stance on the anti-government protest - that an election alone would not resolve ongoing political conflict in a deeply divided Thai society.

The gathering would have been larger if the former permanent secretaries had been invited as well. I wonder how many are appointees of Pheu Thai and its antecedents.

However, they came to a sensible conclusion. These are the people who should know where to point the finger when it comes to corruption. They know how the contracts are written to catch unwary contractors. They can get back their democratically designated role in society.

There should also be a meeting of lower ranks to relate their experiences.
