A Thai brand taking Japan by storm is finding sales points all around Bangkok
Thai brand Mywarisa is gaining popularity rapidly among Japanese online shoppers with its fashionable footwear for women. Designer Anawin Kangwalkulkij and his accountant girlfriend have a hit on their hands.
They started out selling their colourful shoes from a stall in Chatuchak Weekend Market in 2009. The stuff sold like the proverbial hotcakes and a hobby turned into a career, bringing ample room for even more creativity.
Within a few months they had a shop called Mywarisa, stocked with handmade flats that assured the female wearers comfort with modern flair. Playful in the details and vivid in the hues, the shoes in several materials are padded with genuine and PU leather to guarantee durability.
“Our target is the sweet and lively woman,” says Anawin. “Our shoes are handcrafted – they’re stitched by hand. It’s easy to add details and control the process. We always try to find new materials to make the shoes unique. We have a dealer in Japan and will open a shop in Tokyo soon.”
In Bangkok, meanwhile, there’s a new Mywarisa outlet in the Circle Ratchapruk mall, a minimalist space offering hundreds of styles among the flats, high heels, boat shoe and sandals.
Elaborate mat shoes are decorated with fish ornaments, colourful flats have a see-through mesh making them cool for the beach, and more sophisticated models utilise hand-woven textiles from the Support Arts and Crafts International Centre.
There are boat shoes in genuine leather and more flats of soft plastic, plus high heels in PU leather that are stamped with wood grain and zebra patterns, and leather boots with rubber sponge soles and wool insides for chilly hikes. When it’s not at all chilly, the Circus line of sandals and flats features strips in green, red and orange.
Exclusively for its corner of The Selected at Siam Center, Anawin and artist Wisut Suthiwong conceived Mamuang canvas shoes for the Absolute Siam sales.
“We’re opening a flagship store on Siam Square Soi 2 next month – a four-storey complex with a cafe and boutique,” Anawin says. “And we just launched our Project M leather footwear for men, which is really smart and elegant.”
