Chiang Mai Governor Suriya Prasartbundit called on the NCPO, via the Interior Ministry, to lift the curfew in all districts of the province, citing the need to boost tourism, investment and promote national reconciliation.
In a related development, Chiang Rai-based red-shirt leader Jiranand Chanwong held a joint press conference with the authorities to announce the dissolution of the red-shirt movement in order to “return happiness to the country”.
She said the country had been deeply divided and was unable to move forward, so she brought along other red shirts to pledge in front of the Pho Khuen Meng Rai statue to dissolve the red-shirt group.
“I was summoned by the NCPO and was treated well. The military has asked me to stop my activity so the country can move forward. The red shirts in Chiang Rai think it’s a good idea to dissolve the shirt-colour [politics] in order to cut violence in the country.”
