Junta chief Gen Prayuth Chanocha has instructed the Thai Embassy in Cambodia to confirm reports that anti-coup activist Jakrapob Penkair is in Cambodia, Foreign Ministry spokesman Sek Wannamethee said on Thursday.
The assignment was given on Wednesday when Prayuth met Thai ambassadors and senior foreign ministry officials. During the meeting, he asked the envoys to update countries to which they are posted on the political situation in Thailand and assure them that the junta was doing everything to restore peace in the country.
Sek said Prayuth asked the diplomats to monitor the activities of anticoup individuals or groups in foreign countries such as Jakrapob who often gives interviews to the Khmer press. He recently declared he had set up an anticoup movement to counter the military junta.
Referring to Veerapat Pariyawongse, an anticoup academic who refused to report himself after being summoned by the Junta claiming he had been invited to give a lecture in London, Sek said Prayuth assigned the Thai Embassy in London to attend his lecture and report back to the junta.
Speaking of Chatrawadee “Rose” Amornpat whose comments in a YouTube clip have been deemed as insulting the monarchy, Sek said he junta issued a summons for her to report. However she is now living in London and holds British nationality through marriage. Sek said the Thai authorities could therefore not bring her back to Thailand for prosecution.
