MP candidates can now register via mail or the Internet, as the Election Commission seeks ways to avoid disruptions and blockades by protesters that eventually scuttled the February 2 election.
The EC has amended the election law to facilitate MP candidates and ensure smooth and successful registration. The changes were published in the Royal Thai Gazette yesterday.
The amendment to Article 74/1 of the election law allows the EC – in case of riots, floods, fires, force majeure or necessity – to order candidacy registration to be held at any particular area it believes can lead to successful processing.
It also allows MP hopefuls to send their application for candidacy through express registered mail operated by the state or a private entity or through online channels in accordance with directives and regulations issued by the EC.
