May 9: President Donald Trump explained in his letter of dismissal to FBI Director James Comey:
“While I greatly appreciate you informing me, on three separate occasions, that I am not under investigation, I nevertheless concur with the judgement of the Department of Justice that you are not able to effectively lead the bureau.”
The reason given on that day was that Mr Comey failed to prosecute Hillary Clinton for the controversies over her email accounts during her time as secretary of state under the Barack Obama administration.
Two days later, in his interview with NBC, the President Trump declared that despite the DOJ’s recommendation, he had decided to fire Mr Comey anyway.
Then a week later, Robert Mueller, a former FBI director, was appointed special counsel to lead the investigation into possible ties between the Trump campaign team and Russia – to help Mr Trump win the 2016 election.
On June 16 – two days after his 71st birthday – President Trump tweeted: “I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director! Witch Hunt.”
It looks like President Trump has landed himself in trouble because of his own back-and-forth story-switching!
