Given our ageing society, shrinking labour force and low birth rate for several decades, the campaign urging Thai citizens to “have babies for the country” is well-intentioned and necessary.
However, the focus so far has been on mothers and on children’s health. Other important factors that would encourage couples to have babies are being overlooked.
Missing from the campaign is the comprehensive raft of incentives needed to fuel a population boost. This should include revision of existing incentives such as maternity leave, as well as tax relief, childcare in the workplace and other forms of welfare provision for parents.
