Re: "Mass media coverage of MH17 disaster biased", Letters, July 26
The Russian Embassy in Thailand accused the Western media and The Nation of being one-sided. With due respect, the tragic losses of MH17 in an area controlled by the Ukrainian rebels, a Russian ally, 40km from the Russian border and shot down with a Russian-made Buk surface-to-air missile, would naturally cause anyone to suspect Russian involvement. Nearly 300 passengers and 20 whole families were completely wiped out with one shot, a shock to any decent man. The embassy’s proclamation of innocence and accusation that others are being unfair taxes rationality to the extreme.
It is even worse in its defence in casting doubts on the pilots’ competency and the bad faith of the pro-Western Ukrainian Armed Forces. It is scraping the barrel in an effort to mitigate possible Russian guilt. And yet the embassy has the cheek to ask why the Western media doesn’t report its side of the story.
Your Excellency, Mr Ambassador, may I help you to come to the ground of rationality. No, Russia was not directly involved and it was the delinquency of the separatists. For the separatists, it was purely a case of misidentifying a passenger plane. With this logic, you two might now sleep better.
