Army Chief Prayuth Chan-Ocha has declared that it would be wrong to remove his boss, Yingluck Shinawatra, from her posts as prime minister and defence secretary.
These posts are political and therefore temporary. Prayuth owes permanent allegiance to His Majesty, the head of state in the people’s name. The military must remain apolitical, and on that basis the general’s comment is out of order.
The duty of the military is to protect the sovereignty of the Kingdom from aggression, be it from a foreign source or from within the country itself. Tomorrow may provide another test of this duty.
