Re: "Turning a blind eye to truth in assault on monk", Letters, March 28.
Robin Grant, in rebuking columnist Pornpimol Kanchanalak (“Staring into the eye of savagery”, Opinion, March 27), has shown his immaturity and obtuseness.
The truth is Khun Pornpimol was decrying a recent incident in which a group of red-shirt protesters attacked a monk – the latest instance in an unprecedented wave of savagery and barbarism in our society.
In my school days I lived in a Buddhist temple in Chiang Mai. As temple boys, we were often punished for mischief by being caned by the supervising monks. But never once did we think of attacking the monks in revenge.
Fifty years have passed, and I have never heard any report of Christian priests, Jewish rabbis or Muslim imams being physically attacked by lay people in their own society anywhere in the world.
And if there have been such incidents, I doubt very much the attackers got away scot-free.
