Re: "Forum offers proposal for a directly elected PM", Politics, March 20.
One of the forum participants, Thirapat Serirangsan, chairman of the Political Development Council (whatever that is), has proposed a directly elected prime minister, pointing out that it was “more suited for Thailand, as Thai people tended to be attached to individuals”.
If that is true, I propose that persons who are related to Thaksin Shinawatra, including his immediate family, cousins and in-laws, be barred from running for PM. This would give every candidate a fair chance.
Despite having tried almost every formula for electoral reforms, our politics has never been stable. Perhaps we will eventually come down to choosing our PM by drawing names from a fishbowl.
