Re: "The Thai Middle Way offers exit", Opinion, January 28 and 29.
Jeffrey Race’s analysis of Thaksin Shinawatra’s demise failed to mention the illegal lottery, which is tantamount like talking about the Titanic disaster without mentioning the iceberg.
The “illegal lottery iceberg” sunk the Thaktanic – not corruption or abuse of power or tax evasion. Those charges were only dug up after he eradicated the illegal lottery, allowing gamblers to bet on three-digit numbers directly with the Government Lottery Office. The three-digit lottery is a way of life here. It harbours the hopes and dreams of the poor and is a Bt100-billion-a-year cash cow for the “Big Boys” around the country.
It was no surprise that one of the first things the coup-installed government did was to make the lottery illegal.
