The Cabinet has approved Bt234.4 million for the Interior Ministry to purchase 2,930 breathalysers
The devices will be allocated to 1,465 police stations, with two for each precinct.
An Interior Ministry source said yesterday that the road-safety project also required a budget of Bt478.8 million for the purchase of 532 speed-detecting devices, each worth Bt900,000, and another Bt957.6 million for 1,064 mobile speed-detecting devices, also worth Bt90,000 each.
This part of the proposal has not been put to the Cabinet yet because the Budget Bureau has been questioning the high prices, the source said.
“These devices would be supplied to all police stations,” the source said, adding that many precincts used another type of speed-detecting device, which is said to be of ordinary quality, requires little maintenance and costs just Bt130,000 each.
