Thai Foreign Ministry on Thursday reiterated that Thai Embassy in Libya remains open although its Ambassador Kittipong Na Ranong left for Tunisia to supervise an operation center for evacuees there.
The envoy was accompanied by eight students and is expected to arrive Tunisia this evening local time, said Permanent Secretary for foreign affairs Sihasak Phuengketkeow.
The embassy will have a local staff to work at the embassy. Thailand have set up two operation centers in Tunis and Djerba of Tunisia to facilitate the evacuation from Libya whose situation is worsened by fierce fighting between armed groups.
Sihasak said that a group of seven Thai officials led by Foreign Ministry's director general for consular affairs Thongchai Yasawas will leave Thailand for Tunisia at midnight tonight.
The team will coordinate with Tunisia on the travelling of Thais back to Thailand as there would be large number of Thais. The team will also issue temporary travel document for the evacuees.
Thongchai said that the ministry has asked Thai Airways to increase 70 seats a flight on its Dubai-Bangkok route to facilitate the Thais from Libya in returning to Thailand.
