Suspected insurgents opened fire at a police team providing security at Ban Yalaeboh School in Narathiwat's Rusoh district yesterday morning. No injuries were reported.
On further investigation, police found that the attackers had fired M16 rifles from a rubber plantation behind the school towards the eight-member team. The policemen were providing security to students and teachers during the morning singing of the national anthem. While policemen ushered the students and teachers to the safety of classrooms, other team members fired back at the attackers, who then fled. Police collected over 20 spent bullet rounds at the scene.
School director Wannapa Phromphetch ordered the school to be closed yesterday and today, as the shooting had left students and teachers shaken. The school will reopen on Monday.
