Veteran journalist Somkiat Ornwian on Friday told US Secretary of State John Kerry that the US threat to cut aid to Thailand meant nothing.
On his Facebook page, Somkiat said the US$10 million aid-cut meant very little to Thailand when compared to US$800 million of the national budget that Thaksin regime has allegedly misused.
Kerry expressed disappointment at the Thai military’s decision to suspend the charter and take control of the country after a long period of political unrest.
“We are reviewing our military and other assistance and engagements, consistent with US law,” he said.
Somkiat said if the US is happy to support Thaksin corrupted regime, then so be it. “Someday the US will wake up and realise the difference between the authoritarian Thaksin regime in the guise of their own brand of democracy, and the full democracy as described by Alexis de Tocqueville 180 years ago,” he said.
“We in Thailand are now fiercely fighting for full democracy and will not settle for less.” He also referred to reports on the coup by BBC and CNN, telling them that the situation in Thailand was beyond their grasp.
“Time and more education will improve your understanding of Thailand,” he said.
