Pattani district chief's brother shot dead, set on fire

IN PATTANI, an elder brother of Sawet Phetnui, chief of Thung Yang Daeng district, was shot dead and set on fire yesterday morning in Khok Pho district.
Retired Sub-Lieutenant Perm, 58, was riding home on a bicycle in tambon Chang Hai Tok after morning exercises when two men on a motorcycle shot him in the head, doused him with petrol and set him ablaze.
In Nong Chik district, an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team disabled a roadside bomb at 10.30am that was reportedly meant for a teacher escort patrol. The same district on Tuesday night saw two insurgents on a motorcycle fire an M-16 rifle overhead to lure security officials out to where they had hung a bomb. However local officials spotted the device and stayed away, so no one was hurt when it went off.
The blast broke a power pole in half and cut off electricity in the |area.
In Narathiwat, paramilitary rangers provided security to a crew repairing the Tanyongmas railway bridge, which was bombed on May 14. Local railway inspector Adul Torlaema said it would take at least six days to restore services.
