Police seized a record total of 5,689 kilograms of marijuana smuggled from Laos and bound for the Netherlands and Australia, Office of Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) secretary-general Pol Gen Pongsapat Pongcharoen said yesterday.
Acting on a tip-off, police yesterday raided a warehouse in tambon Beung Kham Ploy of Pathum Thani’s Lam Luk Ka district and found 4,689 kilograms of marijuana stored there.
Pongsapat explained that police had been tipped off about the warehouse by a Nakhon Phanom man who was caught with 1,000 kilograms of marijuana in Ayutthaya’s Wang Noi district on April 26. The suspect had told police that he had previously delivered drugs to the Beung Kham Ploy warehouse.
Pongsapat said that the haul represented the country’s largest-ever seizure of marijuana. The top-quality narcotic, worth about Bt2 billion in street value, was destined for transport to the Netherlands and Australia, he added.
