A joint team of soldiers, police and West Manggarai Search and Rescue Agency personnel have yet to find a Thai tourist who was reported missing 11 days ago after diving in waters around Komodo island, East Nusa Tenggara.
West Manggarai Police chief Adj Sr Comr Julens Abraham said the tourist, identified as Thapana Thiracharcenpanaya, had not been seen since he was reported missing on April 17.
“We suspect the victim’s heavy oxygen tank weighed him down while he was diving,” Julens told The Jakarta Post on Saturday.
It was reported that Thapana, a master diver, was separated from his five friends due to a strong current while diving around Gili Lawa Laut island in the Komodo National Park.
Separately, park head Sustyo Iriyono said the park provided a boat to help search for the victim.
“We’ve been monitoring the search for the Thai diver. Our officers have reported that the tourist has not yet been found,” Sustyo said on Saturday.
