A suspected insurgent was killed while trying to plant a bomb targeting state officials in Pattani's Yarang district on Wednesday night, police said.
In a separate incident, a man was shot dead and his girlfriend wounded in a shooting attack in Muang district around the same time.
The explosion took place at the Ton Tam Sao intersection in Tambon Khao Toom at around 7pm. Police found human remains scattered at the scene along with bomb fragments. Police believe the suspect was trying to plant a bomb to harm paramilitary rangers, who often pass that area, but made a mistake leading to the explosion.
Blood trails indicated suspected fellow insurgents moved remains into the woods, with authorities launching a search at a nearby area.
The shooting incident, meanwhile, occurred at the Don Rak intersection on Pattani-Narathiwat Highway 42. It left Chaiwat Kheunkhan, 30, dead and his girlfriend Natnaree Thaen-in, wounded. The victims were riding a motorcycle back from work when two gunmen on another motorcycle chased them and opened fire. Police are investigating the motive.
