To equip students with career skills needed in real life, Nation University has enlisted 36 leading firms to join its cooperative education project providing annual corporate internships for undergraduates.
“We want the students to learn from professionals throughout the four years of their studying at the university. Our target is that our graduates can work immediately after they’re employed without |training,” Duangkamol Chotana, CEO of Nation Multimedia |Group (NMG), said yesterday.
NMG chairman Suthichai Yoon said that only doing an apprenticeship once before graduation was not enough |to change students’ work attitudes and give them practical skills.
The university was holding a press conference at its Bangkok campus on the cooperative education project.
Representatives from the companies attended the event |to learn more about the initiative.
“We hope to exchange knowledge and information with the partner companies. Our students will gain work experience from them, while the companies will share with us whether the students’ skills and qualifications suit their businesses or industries. We will provide training on the topics that they request in return for their assistance free of charge,” Suthichai said.
Asst Professor Pongin Rakariyatham, president of Nation U, said students from different fields should have the chance to work in different companies running different businesses.
“So, we invited them to be our business allies, helping us to produce quality personnel.”
Besides allowing students to practice internships several times before graduation, |the project will also invite outstanding staff of those companies to teach classes as guest lecturers.
All the partner companies will soon sign a memorandum of understanding, which will be in effect for four years.
Nation U will offer them six hours of free training per year in areas like social media for business, while their employees can enjoy a 20-per-cent discount on tuition for bachelor’s or master’s degree programmes or short courses at Nation U.
Pongin also told the companies to suggest useful topics for its lecturers and researchers to research, so they could apply the findings to their business.
Leading enterprises like True Corporation, Siam Cement Group, Total Access Communication, Bangkok Mass Transit System and PTT Group are among the partner companies.
