The Embassy of Italy has put together more than 50 stunning cultural performances continuing throughout the year. This month it’s the turn of Franceso Bearzatti and his jazz band.

Bearzatti moved to Paris in the late 1990s to hone his skills and on his return home was discovered by Italian jazz great Aldo Romano. Musical Jazz magazine named him saxophonist of the year in 2009 and this year he’s won a trophy that further seals his claim to fame.

In 2005 Bearzatti teamed up with punk-jazz trio the Sax Pistols and the Tinissima quartet, blending the vigour of classic rock into traditional jazz schemes.

The name Tinissima Quartet pays homage to Italian photographer and political activist Tina Modotti, to whom the band’s first album was dedicated. It is Bearzatti’s habit to follow the examples of honouring iconic characters and in the past has paid tribute to Malcom X and Thelonious Monk.

The quartet’s previous album, “This Machine Kills Fascists”, took its name from the line Woody Guthrie, one of the pioneers of American protest song, scrawled on his guitar.

The band features Giovanni Falzone on trumpet and “human effects”, Danilo Basso on double bass and electric bass guitar and Zeno De Rossi on drums and percussion.

The Francesco Bearzatti Tinissima Quartet tries to bring to the stage the power and intensity of the originators of its music, and the keyword of any performance is invariably “energy”.
