Acer's latest tablet computer adds lightning speed to Windows 8
Acer Iconia W510 is a sleek Windows 8-based tablet computer that’s thin and light and has a long battery life.
It comes in a white body that contrasts nicely with its black rim around the 10.1-inch bright IPS screen, which looks sharp and beautiful with 1366 x 768-pixel resolution.
The W510 is only 9.9mm thin and weighs just 580 grams. It has about nine hours of battery life and when it is connected to an optional keyboard docking, the battery life will be extended to 18 hours.
W510 is powered by dual-core Intel Z2760 1.8GHz processor and it is equipped with 2GB RAM. The tablet runs on Windows 8 32-bit operating system and has 32GB onboard storage, which is expandable with a microSD memory card.
For data connectivity, it has Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0 connections.
Acer calls W510 as a table with new twist because when it is connected to an optional keyboard dock, you can twist it up 295 degrees to show the display to others.
The keyboard docking will turn W510 into a netbook computer.
The W510 has a good performance as a tablet. But as a notebook, the performance may not be up to your expectation, especially by the standard of Windows 8’s internal benchmarking tool.
Benchmarked by Windows 8’s tool, W510 did not get good scores. On the scale of 1.0 to 9.9, it got 3.4 points for processor’s performance of calculations per second.
It got 3.8 points for 3D business and gaming graphics performance and 3.8 points for desktop graphics performance. It got 4.7 points for the performance of memory operations per second and 5.7 points for the performance of disk data transfer rate.
Anyway, the W510 performed well as a tablet. It took just 11 seconds to reach the first screen for logging on.
It shut down super-fast – in less than two seconds.
It performed most tablet tasks fast and smooth. Its multi-touch screen was responsive and the scrolling of the screen was fast and smooth. I used the tablet to read mails, browsing web pages, viewing photos and watching YouTube clips with a Windows 8 app without problems. E-books were also rendered beautifully on the W510.
Its music player also had good quality. The internal speakers were loud and the music quality was improved when connecting it with my premium Sony headphones.
The W510 also played casual games, like those from Xbox live smoothly and beautifully. I enjoyed playing Pinball FX2 with the tablet using the keyboard dock as a control. The ball bounced smoothly and graphics were beautiful.
Acer Iconia W510 retails for Bt18,000 (VAT included). Its keyboard dock retails for Bt3,390.
