Samsung's latest super-notebook is great for most applications
Samsung Series 5 Ultra NT540U3C-PS3 is an ultrabook computer with a sleek look, good performance and very bright, high-definition 13.3-inch touch-screen.
The NT540U3C looks sleek in its sturdy titan silver body. Its chassis is made of metallic aluminium and its underside is made with fibreglass that is light and resistant to wear and damage.
The one sent for testing is powered by Intel Core i7-3517U running at 1.9 GHz and is equipped with 8 gigabytes RAM and 500 GB hard drive. It runs Windows 8 Pro 64-bit.
It uses 13.3-inch SuperBright 300nit HD LED-backlit display with 1366 x 768 pixel resolution and a multi-touch screen panel. The panel supports 10-finger multi-touch to make most of Windows 8’s intuitive user interface. The screen was very responsive and scrolling was fast and smooth during the test.
The screen is bright and beautiful and is good for watching videos and photos.
The Samsung Ultrabook is highly portable with only 1.69 kg in weight and has about 6.7 hours of battery charge.
The NT540U3C has good performance. It took only 12 seconds to start up and display the app tiles of Windows 8 and be ready for use. Shutting down took only 11 seconds. It took only about 2 seconds to exit sleep mode.
It doesn’t have a dedicated engine for playing intensive graphics games. It uses Intel HD Graphics 4000 for powering the graphics display, which is good for playing casual games. During the test, it played Pinball FX2 smoothly and beautifully.
Benchmarked with Windows 8’s internal benchmark tool, the Samsung Ultrabook scored good points. On a scale of 1.0 to 9.9, the NT540U3C got 7.4 points for its performance of memory operations per second.
It got 6.8 points for the processor performance of calculations per second, and 6.6 for the performance of disk data transfer rate. And it got 6.5 for 3D business and gaming graphics performance. For the desktop graphics performance, it got 5.7 points. It is very good that the Ultrabook has an HDMI port so you can play HD videos from the computer to your large screen LCD or Plasma TV.
Moreover, it comes with Samsung’s AllShare Play app that makes viewing and sharing your photos, music, videos, documents and files very simple – wherever they are stored.
It lets you wirelessly access, play and send any item on any device to another device, storage or web service. So there’s no need for cables or USB drives and you can remotely watch your content anywhere.
Another nice feature is that the Ultrabook’s USB ports can be used to charge your portable devices while the computer is in sleep mode.
The Ultrabook also comes with several useful Windows 8 apps from Samsung, including S Player, S Gallery, S Camera and ChatOn.
ChatOn is for connecting to chat with other ChatOn users who install the app on their Windows 8 or Android devices.
The S Player is for viewing photos, listening to music and watching video clips, while the S Gallery lets you organise your multimedia files. The S Camera lets you make most of the Ultrabook’s 1.3 Mega-pixel HD webcam. It lets you take your snapshots and video clips with fun frames, filters, emoticons and distortion effects.
