Super thin and light, the new Acer Aspire 7 makes for a perfect marriage with Windows 8
A sleek ultrabook computer based on Windows 8, the Acer Aspire S7 offers excellent performance.
The S7 really looks gorgeous with its sleek aluminium unibody in white enhanced by Gorilla Glass on the lid. The glass is scratch resistant and easy to clean. It also comes with a matching white mouse. Even the power adapter and power chord are white.
The keyboard looks gorgeous with a light blue hue. A great deal of thinking has gone into the design of the S7, which has a 13.3-inch multi-touch screen that can open 180 degrees. Dual torque hinges prevent the screen from shaking when you touch the monitor or navigate through the Windows 8 menus and functions.
Little wonder then that the S7 won a number of Design and Engineering Awards in the CES Innovation 2013.
The S7 is highly portable. It’s a skinny 11.9mm and weighs only 1.3kg. It has good battery life as well, with the 4-cell 2,340 mAh battery lasting more than six hours.
The S7’s has a high-resolution touch screen LED back-lit Active Matrix TFT monitor with Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels so the ultrabook is very good for watching high-definition movies. Watching is made even more fund with the Dolby Home Theatre V4, which enhances the sound quality. It has three profiles for watching movies, listening to music and playing games. You can also create six other profiles to suit your taste.
The S7 is really powerful. It is powered by third generation Intel dual-core Core i5-3317U Processor running at 1.7 GHz. It has 4 gigabytes DDR3-1066 memory. For the storage, it uses 128 GB Solid State Drive and it has no optical drive. Its graphics horsepower comes from Intel HD Graphics 4000.
The S7 is designed to start up when you open its lid. In our test, it took only 12 seconds to start up, which was impressively fast. It took just two seconds to sleep and came out of sleep instantly at the touch of the power button.
During the test, HD movies played smoothly and fast and music files played smoothly too with good quality sound. The web pages were rendered by Internet Explorer almost immediately and YouTube clips also played smoothly.
Graphics games also played fast and smoothly. I tested the fun Pinball FX2 and was impressed by the smooth graphic effects and fun sound effects.
The S7 got good performance scores when benchmarked with Windows 8’s internal benchmarking tool.
On the scale of 1.0 to 9.9, the S7 got 6.9 points for its processor performance of calculations per second.
It got up to 8.4 points for the performance of disk data transfer rate because it uses fast-speed Solid State Drive for storage.
It got 5.9 points for the performance of memory operations per second. It got 5.3 points for the desktop graphics performance but marked 6.3 points for 3D business and gaming graphics performance, which was good.
The S7 runs on the new Windows 8, which is really intuitive to use. It presents applications as tiles and the multi-touch screen allows you to interact and use the apps without needing to use the provided mouse. You mostly simply tap on the screen to open an app or activate various functions.
When you are reading a web page, you can use your fingers to zoom in and out of the screen as you do on a tablet computer.
But of course it’s not cheap. Acer Aspire S7 (391-53314G12aws) retails for Bt49,900, including VAT.
