The firm that builds the Ferrari and Maserati designs cool cases for Chivas
Just when you think Scotch whisky can’t get any more traditional, the famous Chivas Brothers wheel out not one but three different looks of super-luxurious, limited-edition Chivas 18 by Pininfarina to rev up your guilty pleasure.
Chivas has previously teamed with other designers for limited-edition luxury presentations, including Christian Lacroix, Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood, but this time the brand goes sleek, streamlined and alluring in a collaboration with Italian car-design firm Pininfarina.
“Sense of proportion, simplicity and harmony of line” is what we can see from the unique case called “The Drop” that was designed to resemble the creation process of a Pininfarina vehicles like the Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Peugeot, Fiat, GM, Lancia and Maserati.
“Pininfarina design is about aerodynamics, how air affects shape, and Chivas 18, naturally, is symbolised by liquid,” says Paolo Trevisan, design manager of Pininfarina Extra in Turin, Italy. “Both Chivas and Pininfarina share a rich heritage in crafting rewarding and stimulating experiences in luxury. Italian style means a sense of proportion, simplicity and harmony of line and we applied this sensibility to the designs we developed for Chivas 18. The partnership was a perfect marriage of value and mutual respect.”
The expensive case comes in three slightly different expressions. Chivas 18 Pininfarina Limited Edition Level 1 is a sleek, bullet-shaped case that Trevisan defines as “sensuous, not minimalist”. The case is finished in a deep metallic blue, which is the common colour for both the design house and the Chivas.
The overall design invokes both the liquidity of a drop of whisky and the fluidity of a fine sports car. The interior is lined with a wood veneer inspired by the oak barrels in which Chivas is blended and aged.
Level 2 (unfortunately they don’t have fancy names for each level) features the same design cues but is a larger iteration, containing Chivas 18-Year and two specially designed glasses by Pininfarina. The whisky bottle is buried halfway into the case, revealing the dark amber hue of the spirit. When opened, the entire piece is imposing, streamlined and masculine, like a private jet. Each unit is individually numbered, to highlight its limited-edition status.
Pininfarina decided it wanted to add a third “level” for even more of a wow factor. The Chivas 18 Mascherone is inspired by a traditional method of sports-car design. The two-metre-tall sculpture/liquor cabinet is influenced by the wooden frames and hand-hammered metal sheeting used in full-size Maserati mockups.
A sturdy interior wood frame is wrapped by an ultra-smooth, sinuous piece of deep-blue brushed aluminium. Only five Mascherone sculptures have been built for global display. But if you have some Bt3 million lying around, you can customise your order and have this majestically monumental piece in your living room.
Thai whisky connoisseurs got their first glimpse of Chivas 18 by Pininfarina Level 1 and 2 on Wednesday night at the extravagant Thailand launch party at Sherbet, Bangkok’s notorious gentlemen’s club on Ekkamai Road. With tantalising Chivas Regal-based cocktails such as Sparkling Peach, Tom Buchanan and Chivas Army & Navy flowing, guests enjoyed performances by local hip-hop group indikator, Brooke Fields from LA, former Victoria’s Secret model Selita Ebanks and music by Two Popetorn Soonthornyanakij.
There are only 100 Level 1 vases available in Thailand, at Bt5,900 each. As for Level 2, 12 units at Bt22,000 can be had exclusively at the Piano on Ekkamai Road.
