Sorry, Apichatpong, but it took Araya "Chompoo" Hargate (in a stunning gown) to get Thais interested in the Cannes Film Festival
She was there this year with l’Oreal, a co-sponsor of the world’s fanciest movie gathering, and managed to outshine even the dress by Zac Posen of Paris with her flawless beauty.
Chompoo said she felt like Tinkerbell in the outfit. She didn’t look like the Disney pixie to us, but it was impossible to avoid the gushing: “The British-Thai model and actress looked like she’d stepped right out of a fairytale in her gorgeous green gown,” UK-based website CelebrityRedCarpet ooh’d.
Meanwhile many ahhh’s were reserved for the other Thai beauty treading the red – singer-actress Ratha “Yaya Ying” Pho-ngam, who accompanied the part-Thai cast of the Bangkok-set crime-thriller “Only God Forgives”. She wore a (sort of) traditional Siamese outfit from local brand Surface and gave the crowd an elegant wai.
Some online sniping ensued as social folks compared Yaya Ying and Chompoo, with the latter’s choice of Western dress defended because she probably had no choice at all. It was cosmetics giant l’Oreal paying for her presence – and the costume.
World Film Festival of Bangkok director Kriengsak “Victor” Silakong, watching the proceedings from afar, stepped in with a (sort of) conciliatory tweet: “So many celebrities have awful looks on the red carpet, but the most important thing about the festival is the quality of the films.”
Sure thing, but let’s get back to the celebrities, and specifically Frenchman Denis Carrer, who impersonated South Korean pop singer Psy and managed to fool a lot of stars at the festival.
“Skyfall” actress Naomie Harris even tweeted a photo of them posing together at a party and swore it was Psy. The Gangnam style and three bodyguards certainly added an air of authenticity.
The real Psy heard about the imposter while attending the Singapore Social Star Awards and responded with humour: “Seems like there’s another ME at Cannes – say Hi to him!”
