Eight great places to celebrate Songkran. Scuba gear not essential
Spontaneity is always one |of the keys to having a good time in Bangkok, but, even during wild, wet Songkran, a little advance planning goes a long way. You’ve got to handle the crazy with a little cool. Not to put a spoiler on the soaked-and-powdered giddiness, but here are a few suggestions for your schedule.
SK WITH GCIRCUIT
Bangkok-based party organiser gCircuit is hosting its seventh consecutive Songkran party fest from April 12 to 14, and it promises to live up to its notorious reputation.
SK 2013 starts off at Zen Department Store’s Event Gallery on Level 8 next Friday, and they’ll be barely finished sweeping up by the time the next day’s fun begins in the same place – the main event, Galactica. The closing party, Fantastica, will be at the Renaissance Bangkok Ratchaprasong Hotel.
Every day there’ll be non-stop music from DJs Louis T, Ana Paula, Micky Friedman, Spectrum K, Isaac Escalante, Head, Tony Preeda and Danny Verde. The standard admission fee is Bt2,000.
The wet side of SK 2013 is the rooftop party Aquatica, where water pistols will be required gear – Bears on Top on April 13 at the Imperial Queen’s Park at Imperial Queen’s Park and Boys on Top on April 14 at the Sofitel So. They cost Bt1,600 to get in. Get advance tickets at www.GCircuit.com.
Drum-and-bass group Phatfunk is hosting a bash on April 12 at Glow on Sukhumvit Soi 23. DJs DeLorean, Azek, Orawan, Instinct and British guest Matt will keep things crazy. Matt’s the guy who launched the *Sneak parties in Sheffield, England, which in turn spawned the *Sneak Vs Metropolis shindigs in Manchester featuring the likes of Mampi Swift and Bad Company UK, Pendulum and Sub Focus.
Get phat with this funk for Bt300, which also pays for a drink. See “PhatFunkBKK” on Facebook.
Culture, music, booze and much, much water mingle at UD Town in Udon Thani from April 12 to 16. For the fourth year this will be the primary Songkran destination in the Northeast.
The concept this year is “Sanook-Sabai-Muan Lai-Kruen Kreng”. You get the sanook dancing to the Rock Kratob Mai Orchestra and other Thai and foreign artists, and the sabai at a relaxing bathing of nine Buddha statues using holy water from monks.
And the Muan Lai-Kruen Kreng zone offers 50 hours of music from 50 DJs, a 150-metre-long water tunnel and Udon Thani’s first foam party. Get the details at www.GoUDTown.com.
ROCKIN’ ON RCA
Careful not to let your vodka get too watered down when Smirnoff and PrahJaoJord host Summer Time Smirnoff Time at Route 66 and Slim on RCA from April 12 through 16. The concept is “exotic island”, so expect the avenue to become an island of waterlogged insanity with lots of music, games and, yes, drinks. PrahJaoJord is musicians Montonn Jira, Joni Anwar and Michele Waagaard, who will perform their eclectic “remixed cover songs” on the Saturday and Sunday. DJs will fill in the blanks with pop, dance, rock, hip-hop, reggae and country.
The Smirnoff crew heads to Bang Saan in Chonburi on April 16 and 17 and ends up in Pattaya for the Waan Lai Festival at Differ on April 18 and 19. See the plans on the Smirnoff Facebook page.
SPY CAN’T STAY DRY
Also on RCA next Friday is the travelling Spy Songkran Party, hosted by the folks who make those wine coolers. After its launch in Bangkok at Route 66, the event will be in Khon Kaen from April 13 to 15, and then joins the gang at Waan Lai in Pattaya on April 19.
You and three friends can win |an all-inclusive, four-day trek to |the parties in Khon Kaen and Pattaya on the SpyClubThailand Facebook page.
KHAO SAN? REALLY?
Everyone gets splashed on Khao San Road. It’s the law. They block out all vehicles (but who would ever drive a car through that?)
You can focus your fun on The Club, which will have its gigantic boombox hammering away outside from April 13 to 15 from noon until very, very late. Dress as though you live in the water. See the deal at www.TheClubKhaoSan.com.
Levels on Sukhumvit Soi 11 is a bit mean this year. Its “High and Dry” party on April 14 lets you stay dry (sweat notwithstanding) inside among the resident DJs and live entertainment, while at the same time soaking perfectly innocent strangers out in the street, shooting your water pistol from a fourth-floor sniper’s nest. The giggles begin at 9pm, and there’s no cover charge. “LevelsClub” is on Facebook too.
‘W’ IS FOR ‘WET’
The W hotel on Sathorn Road has a swell pool for its |Songkran Wet Party on April 14 from 2 to 7pm. Veuve |Clicquot champagne (not for throwing) and cocktails will |make the rounds and chronically awesome resident DJ Deejai and guest DJ Gio Vanhoutte from South Korea will provide the tunes.
Buy “Urban Splash” for Bt950 (glass of bubbly and two drink vouchers) or “All Access” for Bt1,500 (bubbly, Woohitos, sparkling wine and admission to the upper deck, where the cool people are). |Call (02) 634 4000.
