SEC to hold symposium on competitiveness

July 20, 2012 00:00
By The Nation

To mark its 20th anniversary, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) will hold an international symposium next Friday focusing on how Thailand and the rest of Asia can increase their competitiveness using insights from the EU.

"The key messages are about the EU meets Asia and what lessons from the EU are to be learned," Vorapol Socatiyanurak, secretary-general of the SEC, said yesterday.

Renowned financial figures will share their experiences and overviews on driving organisations successfully and what the key successes are with over 500 attendees, including high-ranking officials in the government and private sectors as well as academics.

As the keynote speaker, Sir Howard Davies, professor of the Political Science College of France, will talk on the regulation of financial institutions in the European Union, roots of the debt crisis and resolutions as well as comment on the direction of Asian capital market development.

He will propose how Asian countries, including Thailand, can redefine their structures under the dynamic situation and what the challenges and opportunities ahead are.

Davies is a former director-general of the London School of Economics and Political Science and the first chairman of the Financial Services Authority from 1997-2003. With his expertise in financial institution development and regulation, he had an important role in laying out the regulatory structure of UK’s financial institutions.

Deputy Prime Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong, also the finance minister, will speak on capital market development in Asia.

Vorapol will address Thailand’s potential as a gateway of Asia as well as a hub of investment.

Christopher Balding, professor for economics and business at HSBC Business School of Peking University Graduate School, will share his experience in the successful establishment of a sovereign wealth fund and guidance of SWF management that is beneficial to the country’s development.

Jose Camacho, managing director of Credit Suisse Bank of Singapore and vice chairman of Credit Suisse Bank for Asia-Pacific, will show how Asian countries can adapt to the dynamic situation of the world capital markets. He has served as a finance minister and energy minister of the Philippines. He was well known in the financial industry of the region as one of a group of experts appointed by the Asean Capital Markets Forum.

Banthoon Lamsam, CEO of Kasikornbank, will share his experience in steering the bank through a financial crisis and intense competition. The bank had undergone organisational restructuring to weather the tough times after the financial crisis of 1997. Brian Tempest, chairman of Hale and Tempest in the UK, and an expert in investing in India, will unveil the keys to success of Indian businesses in the world.

Richard Pyvis, chairman of CLSA Hong Kong, will share his knowledge on how to run a business to gain a foothold in the world market. The closing lecture will be presented by Dhanin Chearavanont, chairman of Charoen Pokphand Group, Thailand’s largest agricultural conglomerate, who will introduce his philosophies in doing business.

Davies will also be an honoured speaker for the dinner talk on the future of the eurozone. The venue for the symposium is the Plaza Athene Hotel in Bangkok.

Attendees, especially Thai firms, should benefit from the symposium’s shared experiences to strengthen their businesses when the Asean Economic Community is fully implemented in 2015, Vorapol added.
