The aim is for the channel to make an operating profit in three years and break even in seven years, according to the company’s chief executive officer Vatchara Vacharaphol.
Triple V Broadcast, a subsidiary of Thai Rath newspaper publisher Vacharaphol Co Ltd, holds a commercial licence to operate the high-definition variety channel, Thairath TV (Channel 32).
Vatchara said the company was targeting to be one of the top-five channels within three years.
"With the back-up of 60 years of experience of Thairath newspaper, which sells around one million copies daily, we are very confident of winning the hearts of Thai people, " Vatchara said.
The chief executive said that out of the Bt6-billion budget, Bt2.5 billion is for programme production, while the rest is for paying the upfront licence payment.
The company won the licence bid from the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission last December by quoting Bt3.360 billion.
Of the Bt2.5 billion set aside for programme production, 55 per cent will be spent on the broadcasting network and equipment, 40 per cent on content development, and 5 per cent on marketing campaigns.
This year, the company estimates it will have an operating cost of Bt540 million and revenue of around Bt500 million. Revenue is expected to surge to Bt1.2 billion next year and Bt2.4 billion in 2016.
The company has advertising and sponsorship deals with five leading companies – Advanced Info Service, Isuzu, Unilever, Bangkok Bank, and Tesco-Lotus.
Yesterday, Triple V Broadcast officially launched its Thairath TV channel, offering news and variety programmes on a 50:50 ratio.
Thairath TV has selected virtual studio technology for its studio, which enables the backdrops of news programmes to be changed to match the content of the news being reported.
