TOT has targeted an additional 100,000 Internet broadband subscribers and total revenue of Bt10.6 billion this year.
Morakot Thienmontree, the state agency’s senior executive vice-president marketing and product development, said that the broadband service was one of the company’s strong growth businesses and it used Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) data communications technology.
Morakot said TOT had 1.5 million broadband Internet subscribers, of which 1.15 million lived in the provinces.
"The service has plans to expand the subscription base by seeking partnerships with real-estate developers to tap their residents in major cities, he said.
Morakot said TOT had to aggressively seek ways to generate greater revenue from its existing telecom and broadband Internet businesses as it had lost the annual concession revenue from its private cellular service business.
Beginning last year, the Frequency Allocation Law forces CAT Telecom and TOT to begin transfer the annual concession revenue, which is their main income source.
According to TOT’s financial report last year, the revenue from its combined broadband Internet business and its multimedia content business was Bt11.48 billion, lower than the targeted Bt12.25 billion but higher than the Bt10.77 billion recorded in 2012.
Last year TOT’s total revenue stood at Bt28.9billion after Bt31.5 billion was forecast.
The lower than expected figures was due to intense competition in the broadband Internet market and the falling revenue of its 3G wireless broadband service.
Its 3G revenue was Bt300 million last year after Bt1.1 billion was forecast, the disappointing figure blamed on the continuing delay of the 3G network expansion.
Revenue for TOT’s fixed telephone line service last year was Bt5.9 billion – Bt6.4 billion was targeted.
The lower figure was the result of fierce competition from the mobile phone services.
The company’s revenue for international calls was Bt568 million after Bt967 million was targeted.
