Cable Thai Holding (CTH) is deploying its own core switching network throughout the country to provide up to 500 cable TV channels, some of them high-definition (HD), and other broadband services over fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) connections.
This investment will support up to 10 million households nationwide in two to three years, Kittsanan Ngamphathipong, chief executive officer of CTH, said yesterday.
“This is a part of our total investment in the network that we plan over the next couple of years,” he said.
CTH last week acquired the broadcasting rights for English Premier League soccer matches for the next three seasons in Thailand, Cambodia and Laos.
CTH has some 3.5 million subscribers and aims to increase them to between 4 million and 5 million by early next year. It currently offers 120 channels, including 20-30 HD channels, and plans to add Internet, voice over Internet protocol and mobility services, which is scheduled to start early next year.
The core switching network can facilitate not only HD content but also interactive TV services.
“We aim to provide triple-play and quadruple-play services to all of our subscribers at an affordable price, but HD channels are set for high-end customers,” Kittsanan said. We cannot disclose the prices of the services. Now, our subscribers pay Bt350 per month. With this regular price, they will get more channels, and some have HD content.”
CTH chose FTTH so that subscribers can enjoy content and services on a high-speed network anywhere in the country. Hewlett-Packard’s technology was used to build the metropolitan Ethernet network, called MetroNet for short. With MetroNet, the company can deliver programming to its 300 cable operators across Thailand.
This network will be centred at CTH’s head office in Bangkok and rely on HP’s Ethernet switches to provide 10 gigabits per second of bandwidth, adequate for real-time transmission of the latest in HD video entertainment and to support more than 500 channels across Thailand.
