COOPERATION between Vietnamese and Lao officials has helped to develop labour skills in Laos, while protecting workers’ benefits and advancing the special solidarity between the two countries, a Lao minister says.

The Minister of Labour and Social Welfare, Khampheng Saysompheng, made the remarks at a press conference in Vientiane to mark the strong ties between the two countries in the Labour field as the nations’ prepare to celebrate the 55th anniversary of their diplomatic ties and the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Friendship and Cooperation Treaty.

“The Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare welcomes the long-term investment that will ultimately strengthen the labour system in Laos under the special solidarity between the two countries,” Khampheng said.

“Lao-Vietnamese cooperation has played an important role in the sustainable development of the labour sector in the country and made a positive contribution to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world in general.”

Many Vietnam-supported labour projects had been implemented in Laos, upgrading the professional competence and capacity of Lao workers to internationally recognised standards, he added.

The two ministries have held annual labour meetings to discuss workers’ rights, protection of children and support for health policy to assist those affected by occupational diseases.

At present, 16 Lao workers are studying in Vietnam and local students have for a long time attended courses for higher diplomas as well as degrees at bachelor’s and master’s levels.

He explained that Lao workers had benefited from the training as participants obtained diplomas in labour and other specialised fields. Some will obtain degrees in prosthetics and orthotics at education institutes in Vietnam. “Vietnam-Laos solidarity and relations have been continuously improved and elevated. It has become a principle of co-existence and growth.

It has been a fundamental factor in guaranteeing the revolutionary victory of each country,” Khampheng said.

He noted the important role the National University of Laos is playing in training and developing human resources for Laos and Vietnam, saying many Vietnamese nationals have graduated from Lao language courses at the university and are now working in various organisations in Vietnam and Laos.

For 2017, Laos and Vietnam will also improve the effectiveness of bilateral collaboration in education, training and human resources development in the Labour sector, while closely supervising and pushing forward the execution of high-level agreements and programmes for cooperation between the two ministries.
