Acer yesterday officially announced a plan to dilute its traditional personal-computer business and focus on mobile devices, not only hardware but also software and services.
Acer Inc president and chief executive officer Jason Chen said worldwide Chromebook sales were expected to grow by 76 per cent this year, while in the first six months, Acer grew by 114 per cent.
“We think Windows [personal computers and notebooks] still continues but Chromebook is an alternative option – they will co-exist,” Chen said.
He added that Chromebooks and two-in-one notebooks – hybrid devices between notebook and tablet – were the bright spots for growth. Acer’s biggest business group has been notebooks for a long time, but now it is shifting to a dual strategy that consists of its BYOC (Bring Your Own Cloud) service and connected devices.
Chen said Acer had five business groups: notebooks, including Chromebook; stationary, display and desktop computers; tablets and cloud; servers and storage; and smartphones, including wearable devices.
“We do not think only about individual devices but we think about the whole range of computing devices, from corporate to consumer and from 3-inch to 30-inch,” he said.
Chen said Thailand was an important market for Acer as the hub for expanding into Indochina. His current visit to Thailand is his first since becoming CEO of Acer seven months ago.
