The Senate secretary general has asked the Cabinet Secretariat to nominate Deputy Senate Speaker Surachai Liengboonlertchai for a royal appointment as the new Senate speaker.
Nararat Pimsen, the Senate secretary-general, said the Cabinet Secretariat has been informed of the election of Surachai as a new Senate speaker.
Surachai’s name was sent to the Cabinet Secretariat along with the name of Uttaradit Senator Phirsak Phojit, who has been elected as a new deputy Senate speaker.
The government has argued that the elections of the new speaker and deputy speaker of the Senate might be unlawful as they were done when the Senate held an extra session for other purposes, not for the elections.
Nararat said she has not been informed by Cabinet Secretariat to explain the issue to the Cabinet Secretariat yet.
