Los Angeles - Jared Leto won the first Oscar of 2014 Sunday, winning the best supporting actor award for his role as an AIDS patient in Dallas Buyers Club.
In the movie Leto, 42, played a transvestite who teams up with a renegade cowboy to supply experimental drugs to other AIDS sufferers.
"Mom, thank you for teaching me to dream," said Leto in his acceptance speech.
Leto's awards came after Hollywood's stars sloshed down a soggy red carpet Sunday on their way in to the 86th annual Oscar ceremony hosted by Ellen DeGeneres.
Stars such as Brad Pitt, Kerry Washington, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Leonardo DiCaprio and Matthew McConaughey braved the damp weather that came at the end of the wettest weekend in years in Los Angeles.
