Hanoi - A 52-year-old man in southern Vietnam is reported to have died of bird flu strain H5N1, authorities said Tuesday, the country's first fatality of the virus in nine months.
"The victim's family slaughtered and ate ducks and chickens from an area where ducks and chickens had died from unknown causes," Tran Dac Phu, spokesman for the Department of Preventive Medicine under the Ministry of Health, said.
The man was hospitalised in Binh Phuoc province on January 11 with a high fever and breathing difficulties, the ministry said. He died a week later.
Test results at the Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City revealed the cause as the virus H5N1.
The last reported case was in April 2013. The virus can be passed to humans who come in contact with uncooked poultry or poultry faeces.
