Rangoon - Democracy campaigner Aung San Suu Kyi registered Wednesday to run for a parliamentary seat in an April 1 by-election that would move the country an important step towards democracy.
The Nobel Peace Prize laureate was greeted by about 100 supporters from her National League for Democracy (NLD) party when she arrived to register at the District Election Commission office in Rangoon's Thanlyan township.
The April 1 vote would fill 48 parliamentary seats.
Suu Kyi, who would likely assume the role of opposition leader in parliament if elected, would run for a seat from a constituency south-west of Rangoon.//DPA
