Border patrol police intercepted 98 kilograms of marijuana smuggled across the Mekong River from Laos to Bueng Kan province early on Wednesday.

Police noticed a boat crossing the river from Laos to Ban Huay Chuam Nua village in Tambon Khaisi in Mueang district of the northeastern province at about 1am.

They saw three men carrying bags from the boat to the bank but the three escaped by boat after they saw police.

Police found 98 bricks of compressed marijuana in the bags, with each brick weighing 1kg.
