Representatives of the Royal Thai Consulate General in Osaka Friday negotiated a compensation payment to the Kyoto hotel where a high-ranking Thai official from the Intellectual Property Department was accused of stealing three paintings worth 15,000 yen (Bt4,684) last week.

The move followed an earlier meeting after the official was accused, Foreign Affairs Ministry Information Department director-general Sek Wannamethee said Friday.

Sek said the official had been detained for 10 days over the alleged theft under the terms of a court order recommended by the local public prosecutor.

However, if a compensation agreement was reached with the hotel, the case would be dropped and the official released.
