Weapons found in North

War weapons were discovered in an abandoned hotel in Chiang Rai's Phan district, Chiang Rai Army Area commander said yesterday.

In "Reung Samran" in tambon Muang Phan, authorities found 34 rounds of ammunition, four grenades, a smoke bomb, two sticks of TNT explosive and an M79 grenade - all of which were reportedly in ready-to-use condition.

They were found in the ceiling, Maj-General Pattana Martmongkol told a press conference, adding that the haul was taken to the Army's Meng Rai Maharat Camp.

Pattana said the Army suspected that an unknown person tried to hide the weapons after becoming scared when the National Council for Peace and Order called for handing in of war weapons and carried out stricter surveillance.

The hotel has been closed since 1997.
