A religion teacher was shot dead while tapping rubber trees in Yala's Yaha district yesterday morning.

Following reports of shooting in a rubber plantation in Baro sub-district, police went to Somdet Phrayupparat Yaha Hospital at 8.15am to find the body of Arong Maming, 56, a teacher from the Ban Seeseh religious school, with four gunshot wounds in his head and torso.

Initial investigation of the scene showed that Arong had been carrying out his morning routine of tapping rubber trees at his plantation before heading to work, when a group of unknown men opened fire at him resulting in the fatal injuries. Police are not sure if the attack stemmed from a personal conflict or is part of ongoing unrest in the region.
