US Consulate in Chiang Mai closes Wed
The US Consulate General in Chiang Mai decided to close to the public on Wednesday following a tip-off from local authorities about a demonstration in front of its office.
It also issued a warning message on its website advising Americans to exercise caution and to be aware of their surroundings particularly around large crowds or gatherings.
The citizens were also advised to monitor local media to keep updated of the latest information about the demonstration and areas to avoid.
The message said the gathering may disrupt traffic in the area. Routine services for American citizens would not be available and visa appointments were being rescheduled for a later date, the statement said.
"Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence with little or no warning. You should avoid areas that may be targeted for demonstrations and exercise caution if within the vicinity of any demonstrations or large gatherings. You should monitor local media to keep updated with the latest information about demonstrations and areas to avoid," the statement read.
