Insurgents set fire to tyres at some 40 locations in seven districts of Yala in the deep south last night, apparently with the aim of causing a disturbance last night and making known their presence. No casualties were reported.
An unknown number of insurgents were involved in the coordinated demonstrations of presence in the province, setting automobile tires afire at some 40 locations in all off Yala's districts except Betong.Police said burning tires were found on roads in eight locations in the provincial seat, eight locations in Raman, four in Kabang, two in Krong Pinang, five in Yaha, nine in Bannang Sata and five in Than To.
The insurgents are believed to have divided into groups of seven or eight armed men who operated in seven districts almost simultaneously during the night.
At some locations trees were felled to block roads. Electric cables and motorcycle tyres were put together and burnt.
The authorities were inspecting the scenes and interviewing witnesses as well as viewing CCTV footage to gather information on the suspects.
