Two female village defence volunteers were shot and injured in Narathiwat's Rusoh district yesterday morning in what police suspected was part of the ongoing unrest in the region.

Saisuda Khongchon, 31, and Patcharee Ubonpakdee, 38, were returning on a motorcycle from doing an errand when they were tailed by two men on a motorcycle, before the pillion rider opened fire at them at 11am in tambon Rueso Ok. Saisuda was shot in the leg and hip while Patcharee was hit in the hip before their motorbike crashed and the attackers fled.

Earlier, a roadside bomb went off at 10.20am in tambon Phadungmat of Chanae district and hit an armoured pick-up truck in which Chanae district chief Traitip Sakulpradit and five security volunteers were travelling.

The 25kg home-made bomb, which created a 90cm-deep, 80cm-wide crater in ground near the shrapnel-ridden truck, was detonated by a communication radio. Police suspect the attack was part of the ongoing unrest in the region, and that the target was Traitip, who only landed the job two months ago.
