Two Narathiwat security personnel who allegedly had a hand in the assassination of a landfill contractor and his friend last Saturday have been arrested, authorities said yesterday.

Provincial police chief Pol Maj-General Pattanawut Angkhanawin identified the suspects as Chief Petty Officer First Class Somporn Langdecg, a marine stationed at the Chulabhorn Camp who reportedly used a state pick-up truck in the attack, and ranger Somchai Saengchan, who reportedly drove the truck.
Both were alleged to have been involved in the killings of Muhammad-dao Sani and Saidee Yalaesa-ngae in Rangae district.
The investigation had also led to the issuing of an arrest warrant for a Muang district defence volunteer Chalee Chaiyao, who is suspected of being the shooter.
The three men were allegedly hired to launch the fatal attack, which is believed to have stemmed from a conflict over a landfill contract.
Pattanawut said the officers would face harsh punishment because their alleged action had tarnished the image of security personnel.
Narathiwat Governor Natthapong Sirichana said several incidents in the province had reportedly been linked to state officials, and hence he has instructed agencies to check on officers every three months to prevent the involvement of state officials in criminal cases.
