Two police officers were killed and two villagers were wounded during an ambush by insurgents in Narathiwat's Tak Bai district late Saturday night.

A squad of six police officers were travelling on three motorbikes on a road near Ban Taba in Tambon Jehae when three groups of militants ambushed them, Tak Bai Police Station duty officer Lt-Colonel Wuthichai Laobutsri said.

Witnesses said the insurgents, estimated at 10 in total, opened fire at 11.50pm. Squad leader Corporal Suvit Taweeta and Corporal Winai Khamsai, who were riding on the third motorcy¬cle, were shot dead. Two rifles and two handguns were taken from them.
A 20-minute shootout ensued. The insurgents fled before rein¬forcements arrived.  Two villagers were hit by stray bullets.
